Collage stop-motion animation in Canva

This collage animation took more than 600 Canva pages. Rather than walk through every frame, this tutorial breaks down four scenes that cover every technique you need: a scrapbook title, a sweeping-hand reveal, a paper-tear transition and the illusion of depth. With those four, you can build your own.

What you’ll learn

  • Build titles from scrapbook letters and animate them
  • Do stop-motion in Canva by splitting pages every 0.1 seconds
  • Create a sweeping-hand wipe that reveals the next scene
  • Tear a scene in half with paper-tear elements
  • Fake depth and movement by scaling layers frame by frame

What you need

  • Canva Pro
  • A 16:9 video design
  • Patience: stop-motion is page-by-page work

Step by step

Build a scrapbook title on an old TV

Open the video library, search Old TV and drag it to the edge of the canvas so it snaps into the background.

In the elements tab, search scrapbook letter followed by the letter you need (for example scrapbook letter L) and build your title letter by letter. Add a subtitle in a handwritten font such as Storybook Rough.

Give the letters a Scrapbook animation with On enter selected and the subtitle a Typewriter animation.

Set up the next scene underneath

Create the background for the next scene (I used a space image with a retro filter). Copy it onto the intro page and send it to the back. The sweeping hand will reveal it in the next step.

Animate the sweeping hand

In the photos library, turn on the Cutouts only filter and search helping hand. Rotate it 90°, flip it vertically and give it a sepia Duotone in Edit photo.

Move the playhead just past the end of the letter animation and split the page with S. On the new page, clear the animations and park the hand at the left edge with only the thumb showing.

Zoom the timeline to 500%. Move the playhead forward 0.1s, press S, nudge the hand forward and crop the old background so its edge follows the finger. Repeat across the frame, pushing the letters along as the hand passes.

Grow a planet frame by frame

Open the Magic Media app, choose Graphics with the scrapbook style, and generate a simple subject such as an alien planet.

Shrink it as small as it goes and set the page to 0.2s. Press Ctrl+D to duplicate the page, enlarge the planet a little, and repeat until it’s in full view.

Make it float

On a final 3.5s page, add a scrapbook-letter title. Give the planet a Rotate motion effect at the slowest speed plus a custom animation path drawn in small circles, with the Smooth movement style.

Add a scrapbook arrow with a Neon animation and use Show timing to bring it in after the letters.

Rip the scene open with a paper tear

Build the next scene: an alien planet sky background with a peppermint Duotone at 45%, and an industrial warehouse exterior with the background removed and a sepia tone at 80%.

Use Magic Edit to paint a sign on the building, then Grab Text to change the wording. Group the text and building with Ctrl+G.

Paste these layers behind the planet on the previous scene. Duplicate the planet layer, crop one copy to the left half and the other to the right half, and add a paper tear element to each edge. Group each half with its tear.

Now go frame by frame: pull the two halves apart while lifting the building into view.

Create depth and movement

To make an object come towards the viewer, enlarge it a little on every page. To send it away, shrink it and lower the transparency.

For walking scenes, put two guides just above your character, one touching the top of the layer and one a few pixels higher. On each page, enlarge the background slightly and bob the character between the two guides.

Tips

  • Keep stop-motion pages between 0.1 and 0.2 seconds. Longer pages make the movement look laggy rather than handmade.
  • Use the 500% timeline zoom. It makes splitting pages at exact intervals far easier.
  • Imperfection is the style, but keep it intentional: move layers in small, consistent steps.

Questions

How many pages does a collage animation need?

This one used over 600. At 0.1 to 0.2 seconds per page, every 30 seconds of stop-motion is 150 to 300 pages, so it pays to reuse scenes and split precisely.

Can I do this without generating images?

Yes. The scrapbook letters, cutouts, textures and photos all come from Canva’s library. Magic Media only made a couple of subjects (the planet and the spaceship), and you can swap those for library graphics.
